Everything felt urgent. Nothing felt doable. That’s overwhelm. It’s not laziness. It’s a system crash. Here’s how I reboot.
Brain Dumps Clear the Cache
I write down everything on my mind. Every task. Every worry. Every random thought. No organization. Just paper and pen.
The act of externalizing frees up mental RAM. Your brain stops holding the information when it sees it on paper. It’s like clearing your browser cache. Suddenly there’s space again.
I don’t even do anything with the list immediately. Just the dump helps. Later, I can sort. But first, I need the space.
Sensory Reset Snaps You Back
Overwhelm is often mental spiraling. You need to get back into your body.
I splash cold water on my face. Or hold ice cubes. Or step outside and feel the wind. A strong sensory input interrupts the spiral. It’s a pattern break. Your brain has to deal with the cold. It can’t maintain the anxiety loop.
It sounds too simple. It works too well.
Single-Task for Ten Minutes
Multitasking is a lie. When overwhelmed, we try to do everything at once. Nothing gets done.
I pick one small task. Reply to one email. Wash one dish. Ten minutes of single-tasking proves to your brain that completion is possible. The overwhelm says nothing is doable. One finished task is evidence against that narrative.
I usually pick the easiest thing. Not the most important. The easiest. Momentum matters more than priority.
Permission Is Powerful
Sometimes I say out loud: “I don’t have to do all of this today.”
The relief is physical. My shoulders drop. Permission to do less is not quitting. It’s triage. Some things can wait. Most things can wait. The world will not end if you answer that email tomorrow.
I write down what I’m actually doing today. Three things. That’s it. The rest is for another day.

Resetting isn’t about productivity. It’s about survival. Take the break. Clear the cache. Start small.
